The Way Forward

In light of the failing theological and structural integrity of the PCC, the 2017 Psalt Conference identified three responses which those who share the common doctrinal unity of our Basis of Union were considering. Some were prepared to “stay and pray”; others were looking as to how they might “pull away”; and still others were looking to “pull out” and leave the PCC. This document takes a closer look at what has occurred over the past three years in these various streams, and may serve as a resource to Sessions and congregations as they try to determine which stream they are going to end up in. … Read more

An Invitation to Join Strategic Response Teams

Nothing is more alienating than the church you love abandoning faithful doctrine and practice to the point that you no longer can identify with it. Faithfulness to Jesus Christ, through the direction of the Holy Spirit, to the glory of God the Father, through the Scriptures is our first calling. While the marriage and sexuality ... Read more

Legal Opinions on the Impact of the Remits

Two advocates before the Supreme Court of Canada have written opinions that if the Remits are implemented in their current form, it will be difficult to effectively defend the position of PCC clergy, congregations, or members who refuse to participate in same-sex wedding ceremonies, with potential resulting liability to the PCC itself. Any member of a church court can forward these legal opinions to their court’s clerk … Read more

Remit Reflection/Response

We are very grateful for the spirit underlying the presentation of the remits to the 145th General Assembly. For a long time and certainly since 2015 this debate has had times of rancour and division. The expressed attitude of the mover of these remits was one intended to promote harmony and unity. For such action we are ... Read more

Presbytery Remit Voting

From October 2019 through March 2020, each of the 45 presbyteries in the Presbyterian Church in Canada voted on the two remits concerning same-sex marriage and ordination. A majority of the 45 presbyteries approved, and that majority consists of at least half of the combined total of the constituent members on the rolls of presbyteries, so the remits will go to the next General Assembly, expected in 2021, which is free to vote “Yes” or “No”. The results of the voting are posted here.

PSALT’s Response to the Remits

The unity of the Presbyterian Church in Canada is being challenged. In this generation, people wonder “Can this church hold together?” The best answer to that question is to look at how the church has held together in its history. In 1875, four synods growing out of the Church of Scotland joined to form the ... Read more
